(Sorry if it's not as enthusiastic as last weeks
I have to rush this because I have an essay due)

I thought it was "Princess Rosa" not
    "Princess Roza". .__.

    *swoons and fangirls over Kijima-san*

As for the possibility for Ren crashing.
I doubt it'll happen. Like Nakamura-sensei is really gonna injure Ren. Ohoho how preposterous!

...oh crap, I hope I don't jink that.

  15. Thanks for the translation.. I saw the raw earlier but was in a hurry to go to work, so I didn't dwell on it much.. just glance through.. it's so funny how Ren got Kyoko out of there the moment he sensed Kijima approaching. LOL.. Kyoko didn't make the charm for him, she herself is a charm too.. I worry about the next chapter (Ah.. we have to wait till Oct 5th, a month full), hopefully nothing too bad will happen, it seems like it's suggesting something bad will happen to Ren (Princess Roza fell off), hopefully whatever it is, Kyoko will be able to rush there to save him.

  20. Thank you so much for the translation. Finally, I am so happy that Ren got to see Kyoko's Natsu appearance. I so want to know what he wanted to tell her when she cut him off. Guess it would have been a beautiful compliment.
So glad they had this short moment of showing their care for each other in this chapter.

I just don't know how I can possibly wait one whole month with this menacing cliffhanger at the end. I'd love to see some ren+car stunt action, but I don't want him to get seriously injured. But him being in danger might force kyoko to further realize her feelings ...
    aaargh, one month of torture.

Yashiro and Kijima were as adorable as ever.
Thanks so much again for your work.

I think you do a great job with the translations and you're getting better every time. I read other translations, but I seem to prefer yours and your blog the best. There's more fun going on here. 25. This was a fun chapter, especially Ren's and Yashiro's reaction to Natsu. And I think those actresses commenting on Kyoko's changed appearance might have been among those who were vocal about not being impressed by the usual Kyoko, especially compared to Angel B.

Hmmm... Unless you specifically invite comments on your translation, I'll just say this translation is better than the one for the previous chapter.

  35. Thank you for the translation! It sounds good to me, on par with the other translations I've read. The part about the "butterfly" at the beginning was easy to understand.

    Thanks again! We love you!

    ReplyDelete
  36. it's me again.. forgot to comment on Mechgouki-kun.. your translation is so much better this time compared to last chapter.

@Mahaoui. Well, yes, Princess Rosa's chain did not break (the picture shows that it's just the clip that hold the chain together around the neck kinda came off), it did fall off, but didn't break, Kyoko just need to clip it back on her neck.

There was a saying about it's a bad omen if your necklace or other jewelries (accessories) suddenly break off (like the chain breaks for no reason), in this case, it's somewhat like a bad omen too (I believe that's what Nakamura-sensei is trying to indicate due to Ren doing some dangerous stunt and Princess Rosa is basically tied to him (it's a gift from him). But I'm hoping (crossing my fingers) that it's nothing too serious. I don't want Ren to get seriously injured (or endangering his life). Plus there's a reason why the author mentioned Lory's comments on how Kyoko is Ren's protective charm, and the fact that the necklace only came off but did not break. So I'm thinking, there will be a slight accident (something went wrong during the stunt), Ren got into a dangerous situation, and Kyoko was somehow able to rush there to save him due to her strong sense on this kind of bad omen.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OK, I just read it! Mech, I think you are great! You work so fast and it's always good. As I have said before, I'm Spanish speaker and I always understand your translations. I hope you keep doing this.
I have no idea of how does the thing of rights work, but if this can be useful, this page (http://www.17kkmh.com/intro/8648.htm) has the raws. The problem is that they take their time updating them. Hope it works, if not, I'm sorry, at least I tried.
About the story, if I could, I would hit Kyoko, ¡REN WAS TRYING SO HARD TO TELL HER SHE WAS BEAUTYFUL!!!! AND SHE JUST INTERRUMPS HIM!! I MEAN, HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE HER SEMPAI, IS TSURUGA REN, DAMN, WHY DID SHE INTERRUPT HIM!!
By the way, I'm totally scared, I DO NOT want anything bad for Ren, and now I'm sure he is going to have an accident (actually, I feel that since they said that he had to do a scene like that).
Who do you think it found Queen Rose? I think they are girls hands.

  42. Note: After some consideration, I have changed Roza to Rosa. Both choices are actually viable.

Referencing to Disgaea 2, the female lead's name is pronounced with a "Z" sound in the katakana. Pronounced "Rozalind" but actual spelling should be "Rosalind".

I changed to Rosa now, but it should be noted that the katakana indicates that it is pronounced as "roza". Similar to how "rose" is pronounced as "roozu".

    ReplyDelete
  43. read it...

hm, ur translation is really well done. Better than before, congratulations ^^

to the discussion if it is "Roza" or "Rosa"...
I also think that it has to be "Rosa". because they used Katakana for this word, it must be an foreign word. And they always write it the way the word is pronounced. That mean, the foreign word is "Rosa", but u pronounce it "roza", when u write it in katakana...
Of course, this is just an suggestion...
And I dont really care how mechgouki write it in her translation...
but I also wanted to say something...

thanks for translation, mech ^^ You are the beeest!!!

Anyone? I worked really hard for this....

    Well, since you asked specifically...

We had to alter some things from Tsukigomori during this to make the dialogue flow more naturally.

Naturally? Had to alter? I just read that as "From around the middle, the flow of the story itself varies somewhat from Tsukigomori." I assumed she meant the middle of the series.

Girl2: He's going to ride in the car again?

Given the visual context, car is wrong since the Dark Moon cast came in the bus and Ren obviously got back aboard the bus. If you don't want to use "bus, then "vehicle" would be more accurate.

Like I suspected, you must have hired a stuntman for this...

I don't see where hiring came in. I just read that as "As I thought, you intend to leave it to the stuntman..."

Ren's reply to that of I did not. should be "I do not." "Arimasen" is present tense.

Ren: It's a really great feeling when you speed at 100km/h, and then you reverse at the opposite lane.

When the car Mitsuki was riding on, driven by Naoyuki, came to a sudden brake, I turned my car into a drift, and crashed only a little bit, didn't I?

My take on these lines are:
"Isn't it at most an impression of running counter on the opposite lane at 100kph,"
"and to stop Naoyuki's car that took Mitsuki aboard, I only make the car I'm riding drift and make them crash with a bit of a ram?"

Ren: Well, it was mental training actually.

The original and (I think) correct phrase is "image training". See:
    http://jvsc.jst.go.jp/find/sports_e/s02_sld/d4_expt/e40_tx.htm
    There's really such a thing.

(thoughts) If you haven't shown more restraint when you were B.J, you would probably be injured...

Objection. Ren hasn't done B.J yet. ;) I think this is better as "You also have B.J soon, but if you're injured..." One of the meanings of "hikaeru" is "have."

(The neither good nor bad ordinary girl?)

I think this would sound more natural as "The so-so, ordinary girl?" Or instead of "so-so," you can use "mediocre."

(Eyeballs? His eyeballs can appear any part of his body?)

My reading of this is "Eyeballs? Eyeballs opened all over his body like barnacles!?"

    The way she says it....
    (it kinda hurts....)

I'd translate "Sonna yousha naku" and "Kizutsukuna..." as "So merciless" "Don't be hurt..." (Ren telling himself not to take it to heart.)

    Kyouko: It's not as if
that I really don't want to do the protective charm at all...

    Page 25
Kyouko: I just really really don't want
you to face any danger at all...

I don't see where you got want. "Iranai" is "not to be necessary."

Ren: (thought) I almost inadvertently reached my hand out to touch her face...
    (touch on the face)

My take on this is "Without thinking, my face relaxed and my hand was about to reach out, wasn't it?" The text for the arrow is "But his face is already relaxed." One of the meanings of "yurumu" is "to relax" (with the nuance of muscles loosening).

  48. @T24

I have absolutely no idea what you said.

As I said before, the katakana clearly indicates that the name Rosa is pronounced as "roza". Pretty much the same way where Rose is pronounced with a Z sound in the end.

Whether you like it or not, Rosa is pronounced as "ro za", as clearly indicated in the katakana in the manga.

There is nothing more to argue about, so please discuss something else other than the phonetics.

  49. @Katherine

Thanks, I have edited those minor ones you mentioned. I am going to review the bigger ones like what Kyouko said first and Ren's description before I edit them.

I know what he said was literally image training. It didn't make sense when I translated it, so I changed it to mental training. Which didn't help THAT much....

  50. @mech
i just got thinking about disgaea 2 and the girl's name is rozalin.. at least in the european version xD

and i think both Roza and Rosa work pretty well, it's not that much of a difference, everyone will most likely understand what it means (i don't want to sound mean, i just can't phrase myself correctly.. sorry) :D

and i still say that all your translations make sense to me, so i still love them! and i was so happy when i said i would start my japanese studies this week but the japanese course i was going to go was full :( now i can't even try to comment about the accuracy..

Needed: Raw, Image Editing Software that support layers...
Select a picture from above and copy it on the raw (with shift)

and some warnings not to use these pages for scanlations.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks for the suggestion. But I really doubt that could work.

A lot of people don't know how to do picture editing with layers. I know, cos' I'm one of them.

But thank you, you have given me an idea. I should make my own raws. I need a scanner, and a way to procure the hana to yume magazine 2 days before it's official release.

  63. oh wee, me is commenting again~

this thought just came up - if ren really crashes (but not like he's going to die or anything like that..) and then when Kyoko visits him in the hospital she could say "you should take care of your body, as an actor"... it would be so nice if Kyoko said that, it would be like Kyoko returning Ren's own words to him~

and... and... i feel stupid for thinking this, but i seriously don't know who kijima is. it's been bothering me for a while but i still haven't checked who he is... ^^' so would someone please tell me? (i'm lazy, i don't want to go searching for that info right now... xD)

  64. Thank you for the translation!

I'm getting a really bad feeling about what is going to happen in the next chapter. I'm so scared that the stunt isn't going to go well. When Princess Rosa fell out, does that mean that Kyoko lost it?

    ReplyDelete
  65. It wasn't shown clearly, but it fell and she picked it up. The focus here is the the necklace falling signified a omen.

    ReplyDelete
  66. C'mon guys, please don't let the comments die. :(

Won't you do this for me?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't think "Kizutsukuna" in this case is telling himself not to get hurt. I think he is saying "how hurtful" or something like that.

One of the uses of "na" as a final particle is to express prohibition (when appended to Base 3 (the indicative form) of verbs). Of course, "na" as a final particle can also be used to express emotion; in which case, "Kizutsukuna" would be "I am hurt!" But since Ren wasn't saying it to tease Kyoko and (in my opinion) he isn't the type to say something like that to himself, I lean toward the "Don't be hurt" interpretation.

BTW, I changed page 27 to this line
Having to give me a simple protective charm would make her even more worried...

    Is it more accurate?

After wrapping my brain around the "sarete" and "sasete," my take on those lines is:
Rather than being given an omamori and feeling her solicitude,
I am made to feel that she's saying, "Why would you do this?" however.

    ~ Katherine

    ReplyDelete
  68. Rather than being given an omamori and feeling her solicitude,

    .............. Could you translate this?

    ReplyDelete
  69. btw, Katherine, reviewing Unrelatedwaffle's translation, I think she was right in one part.

And you don’t need a protective charm,
Because you won’t let yourself get put in danger.

I think this line is the correct one. What do you think?

When I first read the raw, I was under the impression that she was saying it's not that she doesn't want to hand him the charm.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rather than being given an omamori and feeling her solicitude,
    .............. Could you translate this?

Rather than being given a protective amulet
    and feeling her concern.

    That's by best translation. ^^;

    ReplyDelete
  71. @T24.. there are too many fanfics already about the main character losing memory.. seems too cliche/ dramatic.. Our author took over 163 chapters to get Kyoko to start showing a lot more concerns for Ren (even though she denied her feelings), and that long for Ren to get to his current progress with Kyoko (so little and trivial progresses at a time).. she's not going to ruin all 163 chapters with killing one of them (that will be the end of SB) or having one forget the other and lost the whole progress.

Nakamura-sensei seems to always give us surprise, no one has ever correctly guess what happens next, well, maybe a few things was guessed right, but never a plot. Anyway, since the fact that Kyoko is his protective charm is being mentioned a lot there, so I think that's what the author is trying to point out, having Kyoko aware of the danger with the necklace fall off, and then able to proof that she's indeed his protective charm by having her somehow able to protect him from the danger.. something like that. This manga has been light so far, funny and refreshing in its own way, a little hint of darkness and awful pasts, but never too dramatic. So, that's my prediction so far... now I shall go and suffer for the next one month wait.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @Mechgouki-kun.. I commented earlier that I think your translation is up to par this time.. It's a lot better compared to the last chapter.. very easy to understand.

    only one thing I noticed.

    Page#6.
Chiori said "Tsuruga-san is over there". In the raw, Chiori actually said "Tsuruga Ren" not "Tsuruga-san".

I believe she will call him Tsuruga-san (just like Kyoko) only if she's actually talking to him. If she's just referring or mentioning his name in a conversation with others, she will call him Tsuruga Ren. It's because she's not on a familiar term with him, unlike Kyoko.

It amazed me how this author is really good with this kind of details, how one should address the other based on their personalities, situations and interactions.

    ReplyDelete
  73. btw, Katherine, reviewing Unrelatedwaffle's translation, I think she was right in one part.

And you don’t need a protective charm,
Because you won’t let yourself get put in danger.

I think this line is the correct one. What do you think?

When I first read the raw, I was under the impression that she was saying it's not that she doesn't want to hand him the charm.

"Awanai" is just negative (you will not meet danger). I read it as:
Isn't it that something like a protective charm isn't necessary? (p.24)
Because you won’t encounter danger. (p.25)

I got the impression that Kyoko's trying to reassure herself that she hadn't made a mistake by not making the omamori. After all, she had given Kanae an omamori without any of this second-guessing herself.

In fact, Kyoko's speech felt ironic because that morning Ren had told the president that he didn't need an omamori (Kyoko), though he'd admitted to himself that there was no way he could think that, and here she is, trying to convince herself he doesn't need an omamori. They're different cases, of course, but for Ren there might be a sense of deja vu. LOL

For the next chapter... I suspect (hope) that the scene will go as planned, but it will still look really dramatic and Ren gets banged up a bit—that would mean Kyoko fluttering over him and Ren unable to argue that Cain doesn't need Setsu's help for some day-to-day stuff. I mean, SB is focused on the showbiz world. I really doubt Nakamura-sensei will sideline Ren with a long hospitalization when he has B.J's shoot coming up. Consider the fight with Kuga and seaweed head: people were afraid cops would get involved (didn't happen), a big media stink (didn't happen). It's the same thing as how Reino's assault on Kyoko was handled. SB isn't TCP, after all.

One thing that might happen is the Box "R" shoot will be over before the Dark Moon car action scene is shot. Then Kyoko gets to see Ren in apparent danger... and maybe Kijima gets to see Natsu! >:D

  75. welll...everyone suspects now that somehting might happen to ren, but he wont be seriouly injured...but i think either 1) maybe kyoko might witness the accident and rush over to the car and see ren...and ends up hugging him or somehting..or screaming for help...
    2) she might feel somehting might happen..and it happened but she didnt see and was informed bout it and run to the clinic room to see him with panic pale face..and then she couldnt stop herslef but to cry infront of him then he reaches for her and hold and she holds him back..and mm might end up in a kiss or somehting...

but in both cases...it will make kyoko recognise her feelings for ren...thats for sure..and i want that ;p

now how goes with case 1 and who goes with case 2??? plz tell me

    Ah, I see, so it's
Instead of being given a protective charm, and feeling her concern,
I am made to feel as if she is asking me, "Why are you doing this?"

The sentence had "given a charm", "be worried", and "yori" inside, so it was confusing. It's hard to say if Yori is "instead" in this case.

Regarding the next chapter, I'm actually a bit worried. What if he gets more than just "banged up a bit"? It could happen, you never know.

And speaking of bad omens, Ren had one himself. Forgetting his watch was a bad omen. But what he feels is that this bad omen signifies that he will lose his composure and go berserk.

Kyouko's bad omen, is about something else.

Basically, we have 2 bad omens, each denoting something different.

    Yes, that's about it.

The sentence had "given a charm", "be worried", and "yori" inside, so it was confusing. It's hard to say if Yori is "instead" in this case.

Definitely confusing. And it's not just "be worried" (sinpai suru) but "be the object of someone's worry" (sinpai sareru). With "yori," since there were no dates or numbers, I started with the assumption that it compares two situations, then found the two situations: the conventional (futsuu) "being given an omamori because the giver is worried about the receiver" vs. the unconventional "the gift representing the question, why will you do this?"

I'm not that worried, because Ren's bad omen relates to Cain Heel and acting as BJ. If he gets seriously injured, then he won't be able to push through with acting as BJ, right? In which case, what was his bad omen for?

Now I'm about to cry cause I have a feeling Ren in going to be in a little trouble and I hoping that Kyoko will start to realize some of her feelings for Ren. Though I'm sure that would be to much progression for this manga. Anyway your amazing and I'm going to go freak out now.

  93. Please discuss the story.

There's not enough discussion of the story going on right now. :( Partly my fault, because I kept asking for evaluation.

Does anyone else think that Ren will get into an accident here? Kyouko's necklace falling off is probably an omen for this.

Ren also did get a bad omen not too long ago. Forgetting his watch, he believes that he will go berserk again.

Both bad omens are for different things... They don't seem to be related.

What do you guys predict will happen in the next chapter?

Previously, my prediction was that Kyouko is suddenly reminded that Ren resembles Corn. And that her bag dropped, and Ren saw the you-know-what she bought. :D But neither of these came true. :(

Anyway, and what do you think of Chiori calling Kyouko the immortal butterfly? She calls her that, probably because she has observed that Kyouko had many forms. It was as if she was able to completely transform herself from one person to another. And no one can tell she is the same person. She implies that Kyouko may look plain at times, but may also look beautiful at times, never remaining the same.

But what makes her so special in this area is what I can't understand. Don't many actors completely change themselves from one role to another? Kanae demonstrated that many times.

Anyway, it now occurred to me. The president placed Kyouko with Ren, not just as a simple matchmaking thing. He really intended for her to save him. But from what exactly? From himself? He must have had a plan right from the start. But what is it? It's definitely more than just making sure they both bond closer, or watch his eating habits.

And what do you guys think of Ren's move here? It's like he already claimed ownership of Kyouko. Better get her away from the other men. :D And it's amazing that he has to do it in such a way where she can't notice. What do you think would have happen, had Kijima seen Kyouko like this?

I don't have many predictions to give. I can only guess that Kyouko is absolutely unable to continue with her act, totally distracted worrying about Ren. And halfway, she gets the sudden urge to run off. That's all I can predict. I hope you guys can come up better ones.

And by the way, I need you guys to be honest with me. How is my translation this time? Is it up to par with Unrelatedwaffle's?

I did get one part wrong, Kyouko is supposed to say, "You don't need a charm." I still have a couple of things to fix as well, I'll get that done tomorrow.

I need to know what you guys think. Is the quality of my translation much better this time?

  98. If something does happen to Ren next chapter, Nakamura-sensei wouldn't make his injuries anything major, would she? I mean, this is a romantic comedy shojo manga. I hope that it won't be anything super serious like hospitalization, coma, paralysis, etc... I bet that Ren will be scratched up a little, worrying Kyoko to the point of a heart attack. Then maybe she'll be a little bit closer to realizing her feelings.

I think the president thought Kyoko could save Ren from his past, or at least, free him from it. He obviously has a temper and from those vague flashback shots, he got into a big fight. Judging from the blood you see on his clothes, maybe he killed someone. Perhaps it wasn't intentional or it was by accident, but it was enough for "Kuon" to escape to Japan and become Tsuruga Ren and say that he has no right to be happy. Somehow, I also feel like the lack of success he had in America in acting might have something to do with his past, too.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm wondering this... Does anyone think that when kyoko does fall in love with ren, she might refuse even more since she hated him so much in the beginning yet he is the one that (probably) gave her the ability to love again. He started to like her when she told him that she wants to act to recreate herself. But then again, she might also refuse because he told her he was in love with that "high school girl."

    ReplyDelete
  100. But what makes her so special in this area is what I can't understand. Don't many actors completely change themselves from one role to another? Kanae demonstrated that many times.

But even when most actors do it, they're still recognizable as themselves. Consider Ren's appearances in Ring Doh, Forest of Spirals and Dark Moon; the personalities of his characters are different but he still looks like Ren. When he's not working, he still looks like a "star"—special. Chiori's similar, up to wanting to be recognized as "special" even when she's not working.

When Kyoko switches characters, the contrast is remarkable—her posture, her mannerisms, her speaking style all change. And when she's not working, she "disappears" into the background. I think that's what struck Chiori. Of course, part of the impact could be that despite all her years as an actress, she hasn't worked closely with that many high-level actors and hasn't watched that many recent productions. This might be the first time she's noticed someone capable of the feat; in the past, her resentment might have blinded her to other actors doing the same thing.

Kanae doesn't disappear into the background when she's not working; she still looks special. Also, Chiori hasn't seen Kanae work, particularly her private acting, so she wouldn't know that Kanae can be so different from her usual self.

The president is known for his intuition (Kuu commented on this), plus he knows how strongly Ren clings to his principles. He probably expects Ren to hit a wall (figuratively speaking) when acting as Cain Heel because of his non-violence stance. I think he expects Kyoko's impetuosity and her instinctive grasp of the right thing (whether actions or words) in a tight situation to propel Ren past his impasse—after all, he's seen them at work up close with Maria and heard from Kuu how well Kyoko improvises.

And what do you guys think of Ren's move here? It's like he already claimed ownership of Kyouko. Better get her away from the other men. :D And it's amazing that he has to do it in such a way where she can't notice. What do you think would have happen, had Kijima seen Kyouko like this?

Ah, that was soooo cool! But with Elegance! LOL I think in his mind, Kyoko is already his. Remember that in the Karuizawa arc, he was willing to defy the gods and tried to claim her in front of Sho. Then in the V-Day arc, he (in Dark Lord mode) warned Kyoko about letting Sho kiss her a second time.

Another thing that's amazing is that Kyoko was oblivious to his hand on her waist! Like a couple—as Sho would probably note, if he'd seen it. If Kijima had seen her, he'd probably try to get her cell phone number and add her to his list of beauties to chat up...and cut into Ren's time with her? And there's always the risk that Kijima might actually choose Kyoko over Momose!

I need to know what you guys think. Is the quality of my translation much better this time?

I already said, it's better than last time. Much better. I might have corrected you on certain points, but that's because I agonize over translations and don't work as fast as you do. And I learn things from you, too. Like that line on p.3 about brown; I hadn't thought of phrasing it that way until I read your translation. Anyway, so long as you're willing to learn, you'll keep improving.

    To the story:
As the necklace fell, I think Kyoko will a) go away from the location to warn Ren; b) she will not do so, but she will have problems with playing.
a): She looks to the car and sees something is not allright. She cries out loud, and warns. (Ren will see she really IS a protection charm; Kijima will SEE her at the end, muhehehe...). Then the Cain-Setsu part will begin and the feelings can go out in the sibling-relation at least.
b):She continues with playing, but the scene will be broken with the crash and filming stops. She runs to the Dark Moon location - car exploded, but Ren managed to get out with just slight injuries (because he took more care because of Kyoko's words?). This could both of them bring closer to say their feelings out (Ren) or at least to acknowledge them (Kyoko).

I hope very strong Nakamura sensei is too intelligent to bother us with the coma-and-memory-lost thing...

The very top image on p.2 looked like the cover of a book, titled "Get the Victory Mark." I suspect much of Chiori's monologue—the description of the Immortal Butterfly and how people who see it don't recognize it for what it is and so on—was actually taken from that book and that Mr. D, who she refers to as "my heart's teacher," is the author of or a character in that book. I think "father of the winner (victor)" ties to the title "Get the Victory Mark"; so maybe Mr. D is the father of the winner in the story?

  106. @Mechgouki

Halfway through it, much of the flow and dialogue has been changed from Tsukigomori.

I think this isn't quite accurate. I read "o-hanashi jitai" as "the story itself"; the use of "jitai" (itself) suggests to me that the meaning of "o-hanashi" here is "story" rather than "dialogue." Plus, in ch.54, Kyoko says she can't wait until the script is done—meaning they didn't just use the script of Tsukigomori—so it's unlikely that they copied the dialogue faithfully even at the start. Another thing, "tashou" means "slightly" or "somewhat" or "kind of"—which is very different from much of.

  108. Now comment on the chapter based on Mechgouki-kun's comments.

..[But what makes her (Kyoko) so special in this area is what I can't understand. Don't many actors completely change themselves from one role to another? Kanae demonstrated that many times.]...

Well, I think Kyoko is special on this case in Chiori's eyes is because when Kyoko transformed, she's totally someone else, unaffected by the others. She's totally into her role, as if obsessed by the character, and turned into that character herself (they had to snap her out of Mio during her acting test that time for DarkMoon). She acts so well that it's hard to tell it's an act, she's not herself anymore. Other actors, Chiori could tell that it's just acting for them.

When Kyoko is not acting, she's someone normal, and nobody would recognize her as Natsu or the Angel or Mio. She could walk around and nobody would know she's an actress. Kanae and others can transform and act too, but people would still recognize them. Just like Mimori (Pocchi), people would watch the angel in the PV and know it's her even before they see her name in the credit (especially if she's already well-known). Well, even though Kyoko is not well-known yet, but how many people could match up her picture (of the normal Kyoko) and tied it to the Killer Angel??.. even Reino had to ask her that time.. "are you the angel?" (like he couldn't believe it, LOL).

Mio is now well-known due to DM, but nobody relate her to Kyoko, since they look so much different, same with Natsu. Or the surprise look on Ren and the Director of Ring Doh (forgot the actual title, but it the drama where Kyoko and Matsunai Ruriko had acting tests in), after they see the transformation of the bubbly ordinary girl in pink jumpsuit, into a beautiful elegant lady in kimono. Nobody looks that surprise with Ruriko's transformation after she got the same make-up and kimono, right?

    ReplyDelete
  109. As for what would happen if Ren hadn't been able to hide Kyoko in time and Kijima actually saw her?

Well, obviously Kijima would be shocked to see that she's indeed a true beauty, with only a little make-up and she could transform. Kijima might be interested in her, and put her in his lists of co-stars to date with. LOL.

I can't imagine Ren's reaction if Kijima asks him. "you have Kyoko-chan's phone number, right?" LOL.. just like when he asked if Ren had the phone numbers for Momose and Oohara, Ren could honestly and calmly said NO.. but now Ren would lie if he said No, but would he really want to give away Kyoko's ph number to Kijima??

    ReplyDelete

Ren doesn't mind lying. That time he went to the hotel to see Kuu off, he told Kyoko that the president had ordered him be there to represent Dark Moon (but admitted to himself that it was a lie). If Kijima were to ask him if he had Kyoko's phone number, Ren could probably calmly say, No, without batting an eyelash. But if Yashiro were there to hear the question, Yashiro would probably freak out silently. :D

  113. I have suspected this. The Winner is actually a title of the Drama she was in? And this Mr D was the director who helped her out? Is it possible?

As Tendo Akari, she's known for The Scarlet Dice, directed by Okuya-san, so that possibility is low. Given the pictures on the cover, I don't think "Get the Victory Mark" is a drama that Chiori was in, since scripts usually aren't decorated.

I suspect "Get the Victory Mark" is a book she read. The pictures on the cover look like a montage of people in period costume/attire. Possibly, it's a historical novel or a nonfiction book like a commentary on the history of theater or maybe some kind of memoir. I'm beginning to doubt it's a novel, though, since there's no author named on the cover, unlike the copy of Tsukigomori 1 that Sawara-san lent Kyoko in ch.54.

I think he was saying that Ren used to be part of a gang that did stuff like this.

"Gang" might be a better term. Given the visual context, I suspect the use of "zoku" is shorthand for "bousouzoku" (a club of rabble-rousing reckless-driving delinquents); also the kanji on the flag means "like lightning," which might be a reference to fast driving. Yashiro previously speculated in ch.100 that Ren had been a delinquent.

On pg.6. - Kyoko is standing still staring at Ren with those fan girls. Since Kyoko is a teenager and only 17, and judging by the looks of those fan girls around "Kyaa-ing" for Ren, they all look about the same age as Kyoko. But Kyoko seems to be taller than most of them.. like a head taller. I had thought that Kyoko is of average size, height wise.

  119. Here is what I think is going to happen:
Ren is going to face an accident dangerous enough to scare him (I don't think he would die).
However, all this will make Kyoko extremely worried about him. She would be really aware of him and will insist in taking care of him (as Kyoko, not Setsu). She will be depressed and maybe, she would think about her feeling for him...
I think that having a near-death experience will make Ren think about the way he has lived all these years. He may want to face his past and stop being a coward.

  124. Kyoko's stance is her normal, very erect posture. The girl shown right in front of her (in the left edge of the top right frame) in p.6 is kind of hunched forward, which would make her look shorter than she actually is, but even then the top of her head comes to Kyoko's mouth. In p.7, Kyoko doesn't look that much taller than the girls in front of her.

Having said that, however, it's not unusual for Asian women to be less than 5 feet tall, so at 6'3" Ren would tower over many Asian women.

In addition to this, I suspect the president expects Ren's feelings for Kyoko to force him into action, when he comes to an impasse because violence is the solution. If Ren gets into a damned-if-you-do-and-damned-if-you-don't situation, he'll choose whichever option will protect Kyoko best. And if the enforced closeness of the Heel siblings' disguise will make Ren's feelings grow deeper, all the better!

But there is one feeling I can't quite shake off, and that is "Is Kyoko really as dense as everyone wants her to be?"

I don't think Kyoko is dense at all - not with the obvious signs. Like now, when Ren was saying something (probably a compliment?), and she just bluntly shook him of. I think she is avoiding all kinds of love and denying it, much to protect herself, because she is afraid to get hurt again.

  140. also the kanji on the flag means "like lightning," which might be a reference to fast driving.

Ah, my English tripped me up. "Kaminari" means thunder, not lightning. Having said that. I happened to look up "kaminari" in my dictionary and one of the examples there was for "kaminarizoku," defined as the Thunder Herd; the 'thunder tribe [breed]'; hot rodders; speed demons [maniacs]. So with that interpretation of "zoku," what Yashiro thought could be "what if, in the past, he was a hot rodder..."

  151. Hi Mechgouki san,

again, I want to repeat saying that as compared to your previous scanlations, this current one is a lot better than those. (I read again after you managed to get the raws. Did you change some of the phrases? Cos it seems more fitting now, and better than the original one you had).

As compared to Unrelatedwaffle, her way of writing seems more like writing light novel way, like more refined, like a girl. So, some people may like it, some may not, cos it affects the way how people perceive the novel.

For this manga, I prefer your way cos of how the manga is being presented - light, fun, as compared to Unrelatedwaffle. Hers will be more suitable for mangas like in the old times era kind. But of course, her details are really there. You may need to brush up on the details just a bit. (I hope I don't offend you by saying that).

It's alot more better to read with the raw pictures. The visualization is better. I promise, I will spam until you get the idea, that is if I know the raws are out.

Anyway, I will rather come to your blog and read all these scanlations. Please continue to translate for us and open such discussions for us to talk about our thoughts and feedback.

You have worked hard. Rest well.

  152. Mechgouki! Thanks for the scans. However I didn't like the post announcing the new scanlation done by yourself, and that's because it sounds like you're scolding us for just getting one tip... I understand it can be frustrating, but it appears as though the other raw providers have become lazy for the last month because FH have been releasing theirs first. It's not our fault if FH scans are the only one available, if the other raw providers don't bother. I did spare some time to hunt for the scans but they were all FH scans, and I'm sure that was probably the same for the other fans who were hunting for them, and that's why they didn't post any links. Now I understand where you are coming from, but still to make a post like that is a little rude to your fans who did spare the time to hunt for them. Anyway, Thank you for the fast scanlation, I know it has been hard for you this last month to get your hands on the raws since FH have been posting their raws! So thank you again!

We know of lightning as the flash, and the sound that comes from it as thunder. Japanese regards them as the same thing.

Kaminari, Ikazuchi, Rai, they all mean roughly the same thing. All the Japan RPGs I've played, all mostly use the term "thunder". Some of them are translated to "Lightning" us version.

  164. You avoided answering about whether my translations are comparable with Unrelatedwaffle's. Does it mean hers are still much better?

No, that means I didn't do a line-by-line comparison between your translation and hers. She gets some things right, and you get some things right. For example, her translator's note asking about barnacles as a metaphor for enlightenment. Another example is one line where she has Chiori think, I’ve found the “immortal butterfly” you’ve been searching for.—where she adds "I’ve found" while the original doesn't have. You translated the second "kantoku" as a reference to Director Ogata (correctly in my opinion), while she rendered it as "supervisor." And both of you used "car" when Ren boarded a "bus"!

Sometimes your translation is more liberal than hers, sometimes it's more literal. I suspect part of that difference is because she writes with an eye toward word flow—how the translation reads as a whole—so it's not a matter of translation skill but writing skill. To give you a lower score on that, when it's not a translation issue wouldn't be fair. Sometimes the tweaks she made to make the translation more readable also makes it less accurate, less faithful to the original. So rather than compare yours to hers, I prefer to compare your latest to your previous efforts.

  166. Sometimes the tweaks she made to make the translation more readable also makes it less accurate, less faithful to the original.

Ack. Grammar. That should be "make them less accurate"

And to add to the above comparison between yours and Unrelatedwaffle's, she rendered Naoyuki as Noriyuki despite the furigana!

You translated "Omae Kyouko-chan ka!!" as You are Kyouko-chan!! while she did it as Who are you, Kyoko-chan!? I read it as Are you Kyouko-chan?!! Since there's no "dare" in the original, I'd say you're more accurate there, but she kept it a question, so her nuance seems closer to the spirit of the original. How do you score something like that?

    ~ Katherine

    ReplyDelete
  167. Ack. "Make it less accurate"

    I really need a nap.

Oh! And she translated "otonappoi" as "old" (EEK!) and "bijin" as "beautiful" while you have "mature" (much more correct word choice, in my opinion) and "a beauty" (again, more accurate). You also handled the stuff about Kijima's curiosity more accurately, in my opinion.

  176. I have a question: on pg.25 you have Kyoko saying that SHE doesn't want Ren to be put in danger, Ren agreeing, her asking him to be carefull, and finally, him saying he 'won't encounter any danger' (I have an issue with this because it sort of sounds like a condesending platitude) however; in Unrelated Waffle's translation, she has Kyoko stating that Ren won't put himself in harms way, him agreeing, her asking him to be carefull, and PROMISING to stay out of danger. It's important because in the space of five lines we see the ballance of who-cares-the-most-about-the-other-contest shift depending on who's translation we're reading. Part of the reason I find skip beat so appealing is because of the understated by-play of repressed emotions. I am unspeakably grateful for all of the hours of work that you put into translating Skip Beat into ignorant mono-linguals like myself. I can't give you any feedback as to how accurate your translations are, but they seem to be fairly litteral and easy to understand. The only part of your translation that I had difficulty with was on page 24, when Kyoko was explaning to Ren why she wouldn't give him the charm. At least you didn't send me scurring to my dictionary to look up 'phantasmagoric.' it makes me wonder what Unrelated Waffle's educational background is. That's not a word that just anyone could pull out of their hat. Her work is poetic to the point where I'm left wondering how much artistic licence she has to take inorder to make the Japanese flow into esthetically pleasing English. I can't begin to imagine how challenging it must be to try to translate such a complex and ongoing story into another, completely unrelated language. I'm a little bit jealous of your ability to read the story in the language it was written. Since, I'm not likely to learn Japanese anytime soon, it's nice to have the two different versions of the story to compare.

in Unrelated Waffle's translation, she has Kyoko stating that Ren won't put himself in harms way, him agreeing, her asking him to be carefull, and PROMISING to stay out of danger.

Actually, all Ren promises is to be careful. Here's a very literal translation of p.25:

Kyoko: Kiken na me ni nanka awanai n dakara... (because you are one who won't get into any danger...) <---this is a continuation of her statement in the previous page that an omamori (protective amulet) is unnecessary

    Ren: ...
Ren: ...Sou da ne... (...That is so, I suppose...)
    SFX: Kusu... (Chuckle...)

    Kyoko: ...
    Kyoko: ...Ano... (...Well...)
    Kyoko: ...Sore-demo... (...All the same...)
Kyoko: Ki wa tsukete kudasai ne (Please be careful, won't you?)

Ren: Ichiou... (For the time being...)
    Ren: Un (All right)
Ren: Kiken na me ni wa awanai kedo ne (although I won't get into danger, will I?)

    SFX: ...Ho... (...Sigh...)
    Kyoko: Hai... (Yes...)

Kiken na me ni wa awanai = "won't get into danger" = "won't encounter danger" ≠ "won't let one's self be put in danger"

  181. Topics to discuss on:

    1) Does anyone else think that Ren will get into an accident here? Kyouko's necklace falling off is probably an omen for this. Ren also did get a bad omen not too long ago. Ren believes that he will go berserk again, because he had forgotten his watch, which were his handcuffs.

Kyouko's bad omen, and Ren's bad omen are for different things... They don't seem to be related.

    2) Anyway, and what do you think of Chiori calling Kyouko the immortal butterfly? She calls her that, probably because she has observed that Kyouko had many forms. It was as if she was able to completely transform herself from one person to another. And no one can tell she is the same person. She implies that Kyouko may look plain at times, but may also look beautiful at times, never remaining the same.

But what makes her so special in this area is what I can't understand. Don't many actors completely change themselves from one role to another? Kanae demonstrated that many times. Katherine here suggested it's because, Ren still looks like himself no matter who he acts as, unlike Kyouko, whose contrast is remarkable.

    3) Anyway, I kept thinking about this. Kyouko believes the President assign her this job to take care of Ren's eating habits. Ren thinks he's doing it for fun, to see how interesting things can get. And we the audience thinks he's doing it to make them closer to each other.

However, I don't think the president placed Kyouko with Ren simply as a simple matchmaking thing. I think he really intended for her to save him. But from what exactly? From himself? He must have had a plan right from the start. But what is it? It's definitely more than just making sure they both bond closer, or watch his eating habits. Katherine suggests Ren will eventually hit a wall with his non-violence stance, and it is up to her to help him.

    4) And what do you guys think of Ren's move here? It's like he already claimed ownership of Kyouko. Better get her away from the other men. :D And it's amazing that he has to do it in such a way where she can't notice. What do you think would have happen, had Kijima seen Kyouko like this?

And has anyone noticed Ren's "Spider-sense is tingling" when Kijima stood up on page 16? :D

    5) What do you guys predict will happen in the next chapter?

Previously, my prediction was that Kyouko is suddenly reminded that Ren resembles Corn. And that her bag dropped, and Ren saw the you-know-what she bought. :D But neither of these came true. :(

I don't have many predictions to give. I can only guess that Kyouko is absolutely unable to continue with her act, totally distracted worrying about Ren. And halfway, she gets the sudden urge to run off.

This is my prediction. The necklace falling off is just the start. Even before Kyouko starts filming, a bunch of weird accidents happen, screaming to her something bad is about to happen. She starts filming, but is totally unable to get into character. Several NGs. She realizes something, and she tells them she has to go. She bolts off, even though she knows she's not being professional. She gets there, just in time to see Ren's accident.

    Anyone has more predictions?

  186. Thanks Kathrine for explaining pg. 25. I tend to get a little obsessive and read too much into details.

My prediction for the next chapter is, that the disaster that we are all expecting won't take the form of tangable danger, but perhaps Kijima will come across Kyoko, make himself a nuisance and almost come to blows with Ren, only to be stopped by Kyoko. I may be totally off base with this, but condidering that A) Kijima popped up in this chapter, B) has developed a sudden curiosity in Kyoko, and C) the fact that Ren almost resorted to violence to protect Kyoko's honor just a few short chapters ago; could culminate to this arc's climax. The most convencing piece of foreshadowing would be Ren's spidey sence. (I really did love that part!) He always seems hyper sensitive of anyone's attraction to Kyoko. Of course there would also be more details/hints of Ren's dark past - not too much, just enough to make us die of curiosity.

I would like to help in the search for raws, but I have no idea how you go about it. Do you just type "skip beat 163 raws" into a search engine, and cross refrence them to make sure they don't belong to hf or are their specific places to find them?

LOL Spider-sense! I suppose you could think of it that way, although it lacked the wavy lines I associate with Spider-sense. Ren has great spatial sense, so he must have realized that the Gata sound meant Kijima had stood up.

Ren: Imeejitoreeningu desu kedo ne (it's image training, however, I suppose.)

    Yashiro: Betsu-mei (A synonym for)
Yashiro: Sore tada no mousou ja nai ka!! (Isn't that only fantasy?!!)
Yashiro: Omae Kyouko-chan ka!! (Are you Kyouko-chan?!!)
Yashiro: Dame dame (No good, no good)
    Yashiro: Sonna jishin (Such self-confidence)
Yashiro: Masu-masu kiken!! (is all the more dangerous!!)

  192. I loved your translations ^.^ thanks so much for them, about the next chapter I have this ill omen that Ren really will get hurt...I even wrote a fic about him dying. I'm also wondering who Mr. D is, well anyway can't wait for the next chapter, your translations are awesome by the way...well with the limited Japanese I do know they seem awesome.
    Great work once again

  193. @Katherine, ah, so it meant "only a fantasy". I thought "tada no mousou ja nai" meant "not your ordinary level of delusion.

  194. "Tada no mousou" = "only fantasy" or "mere fantasy"
"Tada no mousou ja nai" = "It isn't only fantasy." (Can imply that it's reality or that it's not the usual/common fantasy)
"Tada no mousou ja nai ka" = "Isn't it only fantasy?"
"Sore (wa) tada no mousou ja nai ka!!" = "Isn't that only fantasy?!!"

  195. By the way, the note on p. 21, Suffering a heartbreak, she bought it herself. doesn't quite make sense, since "it" is a present, so how could she buy "it" herself. I suggest:
Now, with overwhelming sorrow, she's making additional purchases for herself.

"Kaitasu" means "to make additional purchases" not just "to buy." "Danchou no omoi de" means "with a broken heart" or "with overwhelming sorrow." I didn't suggest "with a broken heart" for the above because readers might misunderstand. I guess this means she's already used up what Mouko-san gave her and buying more pains Kyoko's thrifty heart. =)
